Srila Prabhupada Vyasa-Puja 2026 — His Appearance Day

Vyasa-puja is the ceremony of honouring the spiritual master on his appearance day. The name comes from Srila Vyasadeva, the great sage who compiled the Vedas and Puranas and is the original guru of the disciplic succession. Because a bona fide spiritual master presents the same message as Vyasadeva without change, he is honoured on the seat of Vyasa (the vyasasana), and worshipped as Vyasadeva's representative.

Vyasa-puja does not mean the guru is treated as God. Rather, the spiritual master is honoured as the most confidential servant of God, through whom the mercy of Krishna descends to the disciple. As Srila Prabhupada himself taught, all the respect offered to the guru is meant to be passed on to Krishna — the guru accepts worship only to offer it to the Lord.

Srila Prabhupada, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami, appeared in this world in 1896 in Kolkata, on Nandotsav — the day after Krishna Janmashtami, when the birth of Krishna is celebrated in the home of Nanda Maharaja. This is considered highly auspicious: just as Nanda Maharaja celebrated the arrival of Krishna, the appearance of the pure devotee who would carry Krishna's message around the world is celebrated on the very next day.

For this reason, Srila Prabhupada's Vyasa-puja always falls the day after Janmashtami. In 2026, Janmashtami is on 4 September and Srila Prabhupada's appearance day is on 5 September, the same day as Nandotsav. The two festivals form one continuous celebration — first the appearance of Krishna, then the appearance of His pure devotee and messenger.

In ISKCON temples worldwide, Srila Prabhupada's Vyasa-puja is one of the most important days of the year. Devotees observe a fast until noon, decorate his vyasasana and murti (deity form) with flowers, and perform a special abhisheka and guru-puja. The high point is the reading of offerings: disciples and followers read aloud written homages expressing their gratitude and realizations, glorifying Srila Prabhupada's qualities and contributions.

Pushpanjali — the offering of flowers at his lotus feet — is performed by all, accompanied by kirtan. The day concludes with a magnificent feast, since Srila Prabhupada always wanted his followers to feast on Krishna prasadam. In our own community, devotees gather to honour Srila Prabhupada with kirtan, offerings and prasadam, remembering that it is by his mercy that the holy name of Krishna reached every town and village.

His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (1896–1977) is the Founder-Acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). On the order of his spiritual master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, he travelled to the West in 1965 at the age of sixty-nine, arriving in New York with almost nothing but a trunk of books and unshakeable faith in the holy name.

In just eleven years he established over a hundred temples, initiated thousands of disciples, and translated and commented on the Bhagavad-gita, Srimad Bhagavatam and many other scriptures, making the treasure of Gaudiya Vaishnava wisdom available to the whole world. His Vyasa-puja is a day to remember and repay, in a small measure, the immeasurable debt of gratitude every devotee owes him.

A Vyasa-puja offering is a written homage to the spiritual master, traditionally offered on his appearance day. You do not need to be an initiated disciple to write one — anyone grateful for Srila Prabhupada's gift can offer heartfelt words. Begin with the pranati (obeisance) mantra to Srila Prabhupada, then write from the heart: express your gratitude, recall how his books or teachings have touched your life, glorify his qualities, and humbly pray for his blessings to advance in devotional service.

The offering need not be long or literary — sincerity is what pleases the guru. Many devotees read their offerings aloud in the temple assembly on Vyasa-puja day, while others offer them privately at the altar. Writing such an offering each year is a beautiful way to deepen one's relationship with Srila Prabhupada and to remember the source of all spiritual benefit in one's life.
