Maha Prasade Govinde
A beloved song sung before honoring prasadam (sanctified food) in ISKCON temples worldwide, composed by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura
Introduction
The Maha Prasade Govinde prayer is traditionally sung in ISKCON temples before honoring prasadam (food offered to Krishna). The first verse is from the Mahabharata, while the remaining verses are composed by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura (1838-1914), one of the most influential Gaudiya Vaishnava teachers who revived Krishna consciousness in Bengal.

Translation
1) For those who have amassed very few pious activities, their faith in maha-prasada, in Sri Govinda, in the Holy Name and in the Vaisnava is never born.
2) O Lord! This material body is a network of ignorance, and the senses are one's deadly enemies, for they throw the soul into the ocean of material sense enjoyment. Among the senses, the tongue is the most voracious and verily wicked; it is very difficult to conquer the tongue in this world.
3) O Lord! Lord Krsna is very merciful-just to control the tongue He has given us the remnants of His own food! Now please eat these nectarean grains while singing the glories of Their Lordships Sri Sri Radha and Krsna, and in love call out 'Caitanya! Nitai!'
The Significance of Maha Prasadam
Maha prasadam (great mercy) refers to food that has been offered to the Supreme Lord Krishna. In the Vaishnava tradition, eating prasadam is not merely a physical act but a spiritual practice that purifies the consciousness and connects the devotee directly with Krishna.
The first verse, quoted from the Mahabharata, establishes the foundational principle: faith in prasadam, in Govinda (Krishna), in the Holy Name, and in the Vaishnavas (devotees) only arises for those with sufficient pious credits. This underscores how precious these spiritual assets are.
Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura's verses address the challenge of controlling the tongue, which he describes as the most difficult sense to conquer. The tongue has two functions: tasting and speaking. By engaging the tongue in eating prasadam and chanting the Holy Names, both functions are spiritualized.
Spiritual Benefits of Honoring Prasadam
- •Purification of consciousness: Prasadam cleanses the subtle body and mind of material contamination
- •Control of the senses: Regular honoring of prasadam helps regulate eating habits and reduces material attachments
- •Development of devotion: Accepting Krishna's mercy develops gratitude and love for the Lord
- •Freedom from karma: Unlike regular food, prasadam does not create karmic reactions
- •Spiritual advancement: Srila Prabhupada emphasized that simply by eating prasadam, one can make spiritual progress
