WHO IS SRILA PRABHUPADA?

His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada (1896–1977) is one of the most influential spiritual leaders of the modern age. He is best known as the Founder-Acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), popularly known as the Hare Krishna Movement. Through his purity, dedication, and compassion, he brought the teachings of Lord Krishna to millions worldwide. As his disciples often say, "Srila Prabhupada didn't just speak Bhagavad-gita — he lived it."

Early Life

Srila Prabhupada was born on 1 September 1896 in Calcutta, India, into a devout Vaishnava family. His father, Gour Mohan De, prayed that his son would grow up to be a devotee of Srimati Radharani. From childhood, little Abhay (his birth name) was naturally inclined toward Krishna. At age six, he organised a small Ratha-Yatra festival with neighbourhood children—an early sign of his future mission.

Reflecting on his childhood years, he once said,

"I do not remember a time when I was not worshipping Krishna."

He studied at Scottish Church College, gaining exposure to Western thought, yet his attraction to spiritual life remained strong.

Meeting the Spiritual Master

In 1922, Abhay met Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur, a great Gaudiya Vaishnava teacher. That very first meeting transformed his life. Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati told him:

"You are an educated young man. Spread the message of Lord Krishna in the English language to the Western world."

This instruction became Abhay's lifelong mission. He later took spiritual initiation in 1933 and dedicated himself to studying and sharing Vedic knowledge. He often recounted this moment, saying:

"Whatever success I have is only because I tried to follow my spiritual master's order without change."

Years of Preparation

For several decades, Abhay balanced family life with spiritual service. He started the magazine Back to Godhead in 1944, writing and distributing it himself. In the 1950s, he moved to Vrindavan and lived in the sacred Radha-Damodar temple, deeply absorbed in writing and translating scriptures.

Standing before Rupa Goswami's samadhi, he prayed:

"Please bless me so that I may spread Krishna consciousness all over the world."

In 1959, he accepted sannyasa—the renounced order—and became A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami. His focus now became crystal clear: fulfil his guru's order to take Krishna consciousness to the West.

Journey to America

In 1965, at the age of 69, with no money or support, Srila Prabhupada boarded a cargo ship, Jaladuta, to travel from India to America. He carried a small suitcase, a trunk of books, and forty rupees. During the voyage, he suffered two heart attacks, but he prayed to Lord Krishna with full surrender:

"I am just Your puppet. Make me dance as You wish."

He arrived in New York with faith as his only possession. Later, he said:

"I had no plan. Krishna had a plan."

Founding ISKCON

In New York, Prabhupada faced many hardships—cold weather, illness, poverty—but he never stopped teaching. Young seekers were drawn to his purity, humility, and wisdom. In July 1966, he officially founded the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in a small storefront.

This was the beginning of a worldwide movement. As one early disciple recalled:

"We didn't follow him because he was Indian. We followed him because he was genuine."

A Global Spiritual Impact

From 1966 to 1977, Srila Prabhupada traveled the world 14 times, establishing more than 108 temples across six continents. His teachings inspired thousands to take up spiritual life. Even people trapped in addictions and hopelessness transformed through chanting:

He also initiated large-scale prasadam distribution, started farm communities, opened gurukulas, and guided the creation of vibrant devotional communities. George Harrison of The Beatles remarked:

"Srila Prabhupada is doing the greatest work anyone can do—spreading God consciousness."

Books and Teachings

Srila Prabhupada translated and wrote over 70 books, including:

• Srimad Bhagavatam
• Chaitanya Charitamrita
• Nectar of Instruction
• Nectar of Devotion

His teachings emphasize:

• We are not the body, but eternal souls.
• Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
• The goal of life is bhakti—loving devotional service.
• The easiest spiritual process for this age is chanting the holy names.
• A pure lifestyle includes no meat-eating, no intoxication, no gambling, and no illicit sex.
• "Simple living, high thinking" and compassion for all beings.

As he said:

"If you chant Hare Krishna sincerely, everything will be revealed."

His books continue to be studied in universities and spiritual communities worldwide.

Final Days and Legacy

Srila Prabhupada left this world on 14 November 1977 in Vrindavan, surrounded by devotees chanting the holy names. Even in his final days, frail and unable to walk, he continued dictating his translations, whispering softly:

"Everything I am doing is for Krishna."

Today, ISKCON has hundreds of temples, millions of followers, global food programs, and active communities in nearly every country.

His life proves that one pure devotee can transform the world.

In his own words:

"My books will give you light, even after my disappearance."

And they continue to do so.
